Writing Resources

Here are some excellent groups / organizations / resources that offer writing workshops and webinars, writing challenges, peer critiques, industry tips, submission opportunities, contests, marketing opportunities, communities to find critique groups, and more. Some are paid classes and resources, and many are free to join or take advantage of.

There are many kidlit podcasts to enjoy, and also review websites of your favorite authors and illustrators.

Writing Tips:

  • Read widely in your book genre. For example, if you are writing picture books, read all the latest picture books.
  • Study the books you read – what do you like/dislike? How does the author use language? How do the illustrations (if used) also tell the story? If the text is rhyming, are the rhymes spot on? Notice the themes, story arc and plot (beginning, middle, ending), page turns, and more.
  • Find a critique group of writers at the same stage of the writing journey. This can be in-person or online, or both! Swap manuscripts and offer constructive feedback. And be open and receptive to comments you may receive. Cheer each other on!
  • If possible, take writing classes and workshops, attend webinars, attend the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) meetings and conferences.
  • Follow authors and illustrators that you admire. Learn from them!
  • Read blogs, watch podcasts, and become an active member of the Kidlit Community!
  • Keep writing! Keep creating!
